In December this year, the pasture at Berlin Tempelhof Airport in Germany will be renovated in preparation for the "Sheep Day" event next spring.

At that time, people can enjoy the wonderful pastoral scenery by car, and can also participate in fun activities with the theme of wool to learn about crafts such as felting, weaving, spinning, and embroidery.

Shepherds will share various knowledge and information about sheep on the spot, and demonstrate how to shear sheep and trim sheep's hooves. Through "Sheep Day", people pay more attention to the ancient profession of "shepherd" and its living conditions.

At present, there are only more than 1,000 professional shepherds left in Germany. They work very hard, but can only earn a meager income. Professionals such as wool manufacturers, weavers, and artists will also hold round table discussions on wool as a raw material. As night falls, the open-air theater screens several documentaries and films about sheep.

The old Tempelhof Airport ceased operations in 2008, but the lawns, runways, and buildings covering hundreds of hectares were preserved as they were. At present, it is the largest urban public space in the world, where activities such as barbecue, running, cycling, roller skating, playing ball, dog walking, and kite flying can be held.

In addition, there is a 23-hectare nature reserve at Tempelhof Old Airport, which provides shelter and feeding grounds for many kinds of birds and small animals.

Since 2019, a five-year pilot project has been carried out at Tempelhof Airport. About 80 Scudder sheep are sent to the Airport Nature Reserve every spring. The gentle improvement of ecology and the protection of unique flora are achieved through grazing sheep.

Scudder sheep are small grassland sheep, which are cheap to breed and whose wool is very suitable for processing felt products. But this sheep is endangered. It is hoped that through scientific monitoring and continuous analysis and evaluation, this rare sheep breed can be effectively protected.

Regular grazing of sheep not only clears perennial bushes to prevent overgrowth and desertification of the land but also shapes nature by spreading plant seeds through sheep excrement and trampling them into the ground with their hooves as they walk. Biodiversity in the landscape.

Following the success of the "sheep" project at Tempelhof Airport, Tegel Airport, which was decommissioned at the end of 2020, has also cleared the lawns and runways of obstacles and introduced 50 Scudder sheep this year.

According to statistics, there are more than 600 different sheep breeds in the world. There are more than 50 species in Germany alone, and Germans have a soft spot for sheep.

There used to be a famous "Internet celebrity" sheep Maggie in Germany. It has lived alone in the Jonas Valley for nearly 10 years. Since it has not been sheared, it is equivalent to wearing 35 woolen sweaters.

Local residents registered a social account for Maggie, constantly updated her photos and dynamics, and accumulated nearly 3,800 fans.

Maggie was found dead in the forest this year. Many media in Germany made special reports, and thousands of people commemorated her on social media.

Maggie was already a veritable animal star during her lifetime. T-shirts, coin purses, plush dolls, and wool-felt handmade ornaments based on them are very popular.
